We all wanna be cool. We wanna be as cool as possible and so cool that no one knows what the hell we are doing (even ourselves)! We gotta be the coolest kid ever!
So if that’s what you want, this article is just the thing you need! Having a cool music taste is part of being a cool kid, right? We’ve got your back!
So this time we are going to introduce one of our favourite music genres – SHOEGAZE .
SHOEGAZE started in the 80s during the Punk and Psychedelic movements in the UK. At that time, Rock music was becoming more commercialised and there were bands who wanted to create a movement as an anti-rock statement. Using the fuzz distorted sounds from Post-Punk along with the dreamy Psychedelic rock effects and a few layers of Synth, the rebellious sound of SHOEGAZE came about.
FUN FACT: The term SHOEGAZE was dubbed because all the members of the bands kept gazing at their guitar pedals while playing live. The journalists have no idea of the genre to write onto their papers, so they just named it SHOEGAZE because the band seemed like they're just looking down at their shoes.
These are some bands who are pioneers in the SHOEGAZE genre:
1. MY BLOODY VALENTINES
3. THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN
(of course there're many more)
SHOEGAZE has greatly influenced the music scene today, inspiring genres such as Dream pop/ Noise pop and so many more.
These are some bands that take SHOEGAZE as a reference for their own hybrid genres:
1. COCTEAU TWINS
3. DINOSAUR JR
With this list, we hope you know a little bit more about SHOEGAZE music. Thank you for reading this and here’s to being a step closer to being the coolest!
Also, you might look cooler if you're wearing our stuff, just saying!
